Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of my genius hour project was to demonstrate how to take down predators. Nick and I also wanted to show how the increasing growth of predators is hurting our very own ecosystem.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
Nick and I titled our project, Predator Takedown. I feel like the title is fairly self explanatory. Our ultimate goal was to take down as many predators as possible. We needed to find a place to hunt first off. So, we found a great place right by Nick’s house. We surveyed the land for a few days. We finally found a great spot to set up a tree stand in. Now, the hunt was ABOUT to begin.
Before we could begin, we needed to find some ways to lure the coyotes and other predators in. My dad cuts up deer as a side job during the fall. We both realized that the extra deer scraps would make perfect bait to lure them in. So, we begin to put all the scraps about 40 yards from our tree stand. We set out a trail cam, but never actually got a good picture of a predator. But, we still continued to hunt hard for weeks.
We continued to put the bait down and hunt hard. Unfortunately we never had any luck. The whole journey was not a let down, though. We learned so much from it. We learned what works, and what does not. Even creating this weebly page was fun. It allowed us to let anybody who wanted to, to follow our journey. Hopefully, Nick and I can find some success in the future.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
Our website kept everybody up-to-date throughout the process. I did numerous blog postings throughout the year. Each one described what was happening along the journey. After the first part of the year, we did a video addressing numerous topics. The video allowed everybody to actually hear exactly what we did, and the obstacles we overcame.
I hope this project will educate everybody a little bit more on the ever increasing problem of predators. Yes, we do need predators. But, we now have way too many. Our goal was to take down as many predators as possible. Although we have not succeeded yet, we will keep trying. Hopefully by educating people, more people will begin hunting predators safely and successfully.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I could do anything differently, I would probably put more time into hunting. Nick and I both are in sports and a lot of outside activities, so we did not have as much time as we would like. We only got to go hunting four times. Anybody who has hunted predators knows it takes a lot of hunts to actually achieve success. Hunting more is the big thing I would do differently.
I also wish I would have put a little more work into my genius hour weebly page. Although I did update the page frequently, it still could be better. I wish I would have updated people after each hunt so they could truly follow along. I also should have taken of videos of Nick and I on our hunts. I also wish I did a tip page on how tos for predator hunting. All these would have enhanced the whole project overall.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I feel like I did very good overall during this Genius Hour process. I constantly kept up with my web page every other week with my blog posts. I also put a lot of time into this. Predator hunting takes a lot of time and commitment. Before Nick and I could even get out to hunt, we had to scout our surroundings for weeks prior. Nick and I just tried very hard overall and I feel like that is a success.
Once again, we never did kill a predator. So, we did not exactly have any real accomplishments. We did however learn a ton about the great outdoors and predator hunting. This will allow Nick and I to have much easier success for the future. This could be considered as an accomplishment. This whole journey has been trial and error. Genius Hour is a great activity that allows many students to finally study what they actually want.

Here is a picture Nick took while we were hunting.
